The European Cow Horse Season Starts With a Bang
Travagliato, March 31— Provided by International Horse Press —Over 100 horses from Europe made their way to Italy to take part in the first show of the year: The ERCHA/NRCHA Spring Stakes. Held in Travagliato on March 24-27, the cowhorse event counted over 400 entries.
Giovanni Campanaro pilost Shesa Genuinelypepto Campanaro to the ERCHA/NRCHA Spring Stakes Open Championship
For the second year in a row, winning the Spring Stakes Open Championship was Giovanni Campanaro riding Shesa Genuinelypepto (Oaks Lone Pepto x Genuinely Snapper) for proud owner Loris Paone. The duo closed the cow work with a huge 75 score for a total composite of 218 (rein work 71, herd work 72). With a 217.5 composite score, the Italian professional also shared reserve honors with his other two mounts: Claudio Gattone’s Top Star All Dun (Billy All Dun x Tops O Lena Star) and Dual Aristocrat MR (Tassas Aristocrat x GH Dual Snappin) owned by Antonio Marmo.
“I’m happy to have confirmed last year’s result. As usual, the first show of the year is a gamble since horses are not yet in perfect shape, but as always Shesa Genuinelypepto put her soul into it from day one until the end. She’s now 5 years old so the goal is to do well in the upcoming Derby too,” said Campanaro. “As for the two horses with which earned the Co-Reserve Championship, I would like to apologize to Dual Aristocrat MR because the mistakes that penalized us were mine: I made a mistake in a lead change and my timing in the fence work didn’t allow him to express himself at his best. Top Star All Dun, on the other hand, is a 4-year-old and it’s the first time for us showing together. It definitely went better than I expected; she is a very honest mare that I have only had in training since last October but I think she’ll be a very solid and consistent in the show arena.”
The ERCHA/ NRCHA Spring Stakes Level 1 Open Champions were Andrea Sanfelici and his own Boomer Little Uno (Mister Little Uno x Make A Boom). The duo won with a 215 composite score (rein work 73, herd work 69, fence work 73).
“I purchased t this horse in September,” shared Sanfelici. “He was previously shown in reining and had never seen a cow before. From the very first times he showed me that he really loves them. I competed with him for the first time at the Autumn Show last year, where he earned top score in the rein work; once again he confirmed a good 73 in fence work. He truly has a big heart, considering the little amount of work he has on the cows. I will for sure show him at the Derby, at the Autumn Show, and in the Hackamore classes in the other Special Events”.
Federico Fanti and Stick Snapper Quick owned by Andrea Filzi closed with a 73 score in the fence work and a composite of 213.5 (rein work 70.5, herd work 70) to take reserve honors.
Germany takes home the 2022 ERCHA/NRCHA Spring Stakes Non Pro Championship
Sabine Brasche and Bet Hesa Wildcat (Bet Hesa Cat x Lil Peptorella) earned the Spring Stakes Non Pro Championship. The German rider and her mount took the win with a 210.5 composite score (rein work 68, herd work 68.5, fence work 74).
“I am truly amazed with this result and the thing that makes me most proud is the story behind my horse. I raised him, as I did his mother and grandmother so basically this is the third generation I bred. I was labeled ‘crazy’ when years ago I went to work as a veterinarian in the United States for three years and Larues Imperialil traveled with me too. When I returned, she came back with me already bred to Peptotime. From this cross, Lil Peptorella was born, my once in a lifetime horse with whom I have a lot in the cow horse events. I then bred her to Bet Hesa Cat who is the sire of Bet Hesa Wildcat, the 5-year-old gelding I’m currently competing with. I trained him by myself with the great help of Arno Gorgasser managing the cow horse part, and I would also like to thank Stefano Ferri because he helped me a lot in the reining. I am therefore very proud of the fact that the whole process that brought us here is part of me from day one and although the journey from Germany to Italy is quite long, I am definitely considering competing in the Derby because my horse deserves it; he is always is honest, easy, and helps me. I guess he’s also another once in a lifetime horse!”
Riding her own Brownie Lady (Smart Rey Pepto x DB Cats Sweet Lady), Giulia Costelli won the ERCHA/NRCHA Spring Stakes Level 1 Non Pro Championship with a 210 composite (rein work 69, herd work 72, fence work 69), and took reserve honors in the Non Pro division.
Earlier in the day the duo also won the Spring Stakes Non Pro Boxing Championship with a 212 composite score (rein work 69, herd work 72, fence work).
“I am really happy with the result, and aware that the credit for this win goes above all to my mare and my trainer Pietro [Tuberga]. I bought Brownie Lady from Rosy O ‘Gradys Cutting Horses as a 3-year-old and she had already been started by Martina Annovazzi. We started competing together last year at ERCHA/NRCHA Pre Futurity and then at the Americana with excellent results. The amazing thing about her is that she is a very good-minded horse at the shows as much as she is at home. I just need to warm her up and walk her, otherwise she makes my show life very easy, basically the prefect Non Pro horse! I feel so lucky to have found her. She is now 5 so the next goal is to compete in the upcoming Derby and then at the Autumn Show.”
Jacky Molliex-Donjon of France took the Spring Stakes Level 1 Non Pro Reserve Championship riding Smoke With Justice (SDP Justice is Comin x Dry Smoke Lena) owned by Four Seasons Ranch. Second place honors in Spring Stakes Non Pro Boxing was for Giulia Zamperini riding Easy Smart Boons (Smart Easy Deal x Blue Boons Lil Sue) owned by Alessandra Bologna.
During the Spring Stakes, the ERCHA All Ages Herd Work classes were held. Winning the Herd Work Open All Ages was Federico Fanti riding Sergio Traverso’s Spook A Boon (Boogie Boon x Spook A Tax). The duo topped the class with a 74 score. Scoring the same big 74 in the Herd Work All Ages Non Pro was Sarah Destefanis riding her own Hot As Wasabi (Little Dulces Rey x Whirlacat).
